Business Casual, Solved: A Uniform That Works Five Days a Week

Most men either overdress or underdress for the office, and both mistakes come from the same place: nobody defines what "business casual" actually means at their company. It changed a lot over the past few years, too. The tie has mostly disappeared, the full suit is now reserved for client pitches and interviews, and what's replaced them is a looser, more comfortable uniform that still has to look like you tried.

The good news is you only need to solve this once. Build a formula that works, repeat it in different colors, and mornings stop being a wardrobe negotiation.

The formula

Business casual in 2026 comes down to three pieces working together: a collared shirt or a fine-gauge knit on top, a tailored trouser or a dark chino on the bottom, and a clean shoe that isn't a running sneaker. An unstructured blazer is optional armor for anything that feels like a real meeting. No tie, no full matching suit, no exceptions that make you the most overdressed person in the room.

Top. An Oxford or poplin dress shirt is still the workhorse, but it doesn't have to be white. A fine merino or cotton polo covers the same ground with less effort on a day without meetings.

Bottom. Dark, unfaded jeans have become acceptable in most offices when paired with a blazer or knit, but a well-cut chino in navy or khaki is still the safer default because it reads as "put together" from across the room.

Shoes. This is where most men get stuck. A thin-soled white, black or dark brown leather sneaker is now standard business casual footwear, and a penny loafer covers you for anything slightly dressier, including a client meeting.

Layer. An unstructured or lightly built blazer — no shoulder pads, no stiff canvassing — goes over any of the above and instantly raises the whole outfit a notch. Treat it like a jacket, not a suit piece: it should feel almost like a shirt when you put it on.

Three outfits, one formula

1. Standard Tuesday: Oxford shirt, straight-leg chino, penny loafer. No blazer needed.
2. Client meeting: Same shirt and chino, add an unstructured blazer in a neutral wool or cotton-linen blend.
3. Casual Friday: Swap the Oxford for a merino polo, keep the chino, add a minimal leather sneaker.

Mistakes that read as "tried too hard" or "didn't try at all"

Skip the full matching suit without a tie — it looks like you're either overdressed or you forgot to change. Skip the sneaker with visible foam soles and mesh panels; it reads as gym shoe, not office shoe. And skip anything that needs to be explained ("it's actually a really nice hoodie") — if you have to explain it, it isn't business casual.

Building the capsule

You don't need twelve outfits, you need five pieces that mix into ten. Start with two shirts, one chino, one loafer and one blazer, then expand into color once the formula proves itself.
