The Arc'teryx Beta Insulated is the jacket you buy once for cold, wet weather, and Arc'teryx's own outlet has it at $525, down from $750. That is 30% off, sold by the brand itself, on the current version with the new PFAS-free GORE-TEX ePE fabric.
It is a waterproof GORE-TEX shell with Coreloft Continuous 90 synthetic insulation built in, so it works as a single layer for skiing, winter hikes or a sleety commute. Arc'teryx lists a helmet-compatible StormHood, pit zips for venting and an embedded RECCO reflector for search and rescue. It weighs 640 g and has a regular fit.
Who it is for: the man who wants one serious winter jacket that also looks clean in town. If you want something more classic for the city, our leather jacket guide and the Barbour Burghley wax coat are the other end of the spectrum.
How it fits: Arc'teryx calls it a regular fit with room for a mid-layer. Some of its own reviewers say the underarms feel snug with a thick fleece underneath, so if you sit between sizes, size up.
The catch: the outlet only has two colors, Mars (a deep red) and Blaze (a bright orange); there is no black at this price. Sizes S to XL were in stock when we checked, XS and XXL mostly gone. Outlet purchases often come with stricter return terms, so read them before you check out.
