Carhartt did not just add a colorway. On October 7 it launched the Steel Series, a six-piece line it calls its toughest workwear yet, built around a new Ny-co canvas that blends nylon with cotton. This is our read of Carhartt's release and the launch coverage, not a wear test.

What is in the line

Six pieces: the Steel Braddock Jacket, the Steel Braddock Bib Overall, the Steel Bridgeport Sweatshirt and three pants, Braddock, Baltimore and Buffalo. Prices run from $89.99 to $189.99. Carhartt says it tested the line against its own duck, canvas and fleece, and the pitch is durability without the weight.

The fabric

The main material is a 9.5-oz Ny-co infused canvas. Carhartt's figures: the jacket and bib have four times the abrasion resistance and two times the stretch of its stretch duck. The Braddock Pant claims ten times the abrasion resistance, three times the tensile strength and two times the stretch of stretch canvas. Every number is the company's own, so treat them as claims.

The jacket

The Braddock Jacket adds 80g polyester insulation and a DWR finish. It is water-resistant, not waterproof, so it will shrug off a shower but not a downpour. Chest pockets and a hood make it a real work jacket.

The pants

Three weights: 6.4 oz for the Buffalo, 8.3 oz for the Baltimore and 9.5 oz for the Braddock. The knees use a stretch overlay and accept Carhartt's knee pads. The Buffalo is the one a guy who is not on a job site would try first, with a tapered leg and the lowest price.

The catch

The performance figures are Carhartt's, and the line is built for the job site first. Styling it is easy if you keep it simple, in the spirit of our style hub and overshirt. If you want the tailored side of the closet, see our work capsule wardrobe for managers. For other rugged jackets, our Hunter canvas barn jacket deal is a softer option.

How to start

Buy the Buffalo Pant first at $89.99, the cheapest way to try the fabric. If you work outside in the cold, the Braddock Jacket at $189.99 is the investment piece. More in the menswear hub.
