An automatic watch with the movement on show used to cost real money. The Tornado Autonova Automatic costs about $323 and gives you a steel bracelet, a blue dial and a skeletonized window onto the movement. This is our read of Tornado's own product page, not a wear test.

The design

The case is 42 mm stainless steel with a square body and a round bezel, brushed and polished. The dial is blue with a radial guilloché ring and a skeletonized center, so you see the movement turning under the hands. Roman numerals mark the hours. The integrated bracelet alternates polished and brushed links and closes with a butterfly buckle.

Inside

The movement is a Miyota 8N24 automatic, which Tornado says it chose for dependable performance. Glass is sapphire-coated, not solid sapphire, which is the usual compromise at this price. Water resistance is 10 ATM and the watch carries a three-year warranty.

The catch

The dial is busy. Skeleton centers, a guilloché ring and Roman numerals make it a watch you admire more than you read at a glance. The case is 42 mm, and with the square body it will look big on a slim wrist. And at about $323 it is not cheap, even if it is far from luxury money. If you prefer a chronograph, our Tornado Aristocrate Chronograph review covers the other side of the brand.

Who it is for

The man who wants his first automatic, likes the mechanical look, and would rather spend $323 than $3,000. Wear it with a navy knit and chinos.
