Technics built its name on direct-drive turntables, and the SL-1300G sits in its Grand Class range at $3,999.99. It is a heavy, serious machine for someone who wants to build a hi-fi system around the deck. This is our read of Technics' own product page and spec sheet, not a listening test.

The motor

The headline is the drive. The SL-1300G uses a coreless direct-drive motor, which has no iron core, so it avoids the uneven rotation known as cogging. Technics pairs it with ΔΣ-Drive, a motor-control system it says suppresses vibration for smoother, more accurate rotation. The spec sheet lists a starting torque of 0.32 N·m, 0.7 seconds from standstill to 33⅓ rpm, an electronic brake and wow and flutter of 0.025% WRMS.

Platter and chassis

The platter is a combination of brass and aluminum die-cast, 332 mm across and about 3.6 kg with its rubber sheet. Technics describes a three-layer platter and a two-layer chassis meant to fight vibration, and the whole deck sits on high-damping silicon insulators. The unit weighs about 13 kg (28.7 lb), so give it a solid shelf.

Tonearm and speeds

The tonearm is a static-balance design, 230 mm in effective length, with a direct-reading stylus pressure range of 0 to 4 g. It accepts 12.7 mm (half-inch) mounting cartridges. The deck plays 33⅓, 45 and 78 rpm.

The catch

Technics' accessory list includes a head shell, a balance weight, an auxiliary weight and an overhang gauge, but no cartridge. The only audio output is a phono jack, so you also need an amplifier with a phono input or a separate phono preamp. Budget for both before you call this a $3,999.99 turntable.

If you want a lower entry point, our U-Turn Orbit Plus review covers a $399 belt-drive deck. For the headphone side of the brand, see our Technics EAH-A1000 review.

Who it is for

The listener who already knows they want direct drive, has a good amplifier and wants a deck that will outlast the rest of the system. It comes in black or silver, with the brass platter as the visual hook. See more gear in our music hub and on the turntables page.
