A carry-on is only a good bag if it holds the trip. NOMATIC's Method Carry-On tries to cheat the size limit: 39 liters of space in a 22-inch hard shell, with an expansion zip that adds up to 47 liters for the trip home. This is our read of NOMATIC's own product page, not a travel test.
The size trick
NOMATIC says the Method holds up to 20 percent more than other carry-ons with the same exterior dimensions, enough for up to three extra days of clothing. The full-perimeter expansion goes from 9 inches to 10.75 inches of depth. It weighs 6.9 pounds empty.
Build
The shell is polycarbonate. The handle is aluminum, the zippers are YKK, and four 360-degree silent-glide wheels carry it. A TSA-approved lock is built in. NOMATIC says it tested the Method in more than 30 real-life simulations and lists a lifetime warranty without giving terms.
Colors
Slate, Moss, Black, Gray and Navy. The slate and moss shots are the ones that read as grown-up luggage rather than a gadget.
The catch
At 6.9 pounds it is not the lightest hard-shell carry-on, and the expanded depth is the number to check against your airline. Use it unexpanded on the plane. It is also $299.94 even on sale. If you only fly twice a year, a cheaper bag is fine.
