Most knit polos are cut to a size chart and hope for the best. Son of a Tailor makes this one to order, from your own measurements or a standard size, and backs it with a remake promise. It costs $230. This is our read of the brand's product page, not a wear test.

What it is

The Merino Polo Pullover is what the brand calls a hybrid: the open collar and short placket of a polo, the long sleeves and lighter drape of a pullover. The yarn is 100% extra-fine merino wool, which the page says feels soft on the skin and regulates body temperature.

How it is made

The brand uses 3D-knitting to make the whole garment in one piece, so there are no side seams to irritate and less than 1% production waste. Production is in Portugal and takes 7 to 14 days after you order.

The fit promise

You can order a standard size or a custom one. Son of a Tailor's Free Remake Guarantee says that if you are unhappy with the fit of your first order, it will make a new one at no charge. That promise is the real reason to pay more than you would for a standard knit.

How to wear it

Under a blazer for the office, on its own with trousers for dinner, buttoned or open. Dark colors suit work. For the knitwear side of a work wardrobe, see our work capsule wardrobe for managers, and for a lighter layer try an overshirt.

The catch

It is made to order, so you cannot buy it tonight and wear it Friday. $230 is real money for a polo, and the care is hand wash in cool water and dry flat, not toss in the machine. If you want a cheaper option off the shelf, our Marks & Spencer work-week outfits show the budget route.

Who it is for

The man who has trouble with off-the-rack fit and is willing to wait for it. Start with black or navy, and if you order two or more pieces the brand lists 10% off plus free shipping. More in the menswear hub.
