We pick every product independently. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission at no cost to you. How we make money.

Dressing for work gets easier when you stop choosing every piece and start repeating a formula. Ours is three pieces: a knit or shirt on top, a pleated trouser, and one good shoe. Swap the color of the top and the shoe, and the same trousers carry you through the whole week.

We built five outfits, Monday to Friday, entirely from Marks & Spencer's US range. That is eleven pieces in total, because three trousers and three shoes get reused. Prices were checked on October 4, 2026 on the M&S US site and may change.

Autograph's cotton-rich twill trousers are cut in a tapered fit with a single pleat in front. The stretch in the fabric adds flexibility, and they have belt loops and a concealed hook-and-zip fastening. We use them in three colors across the week.

Why we like it

  • Single pleat and tapered leg for a modern, tailored shape
  • Stretch for a flexible feel
  • Three colors work with every top and shoe here

Keep in mind

  • Not a wool trouser: it is a cotton-rich twill

A work wardrobe is not about owning a lot. It is about owning pieces that fit each other. The five outfits below share three pairs of trousers and three pairs of shoes, so everything you buy gets worn more than once.

The formula

Top, trouser, shoe. The trouser is always pleated and tapered, which gives a modern, tailored shape without a suit. The top changes with the mood of the day: a ribbed polo, a crisp shirt or a fine knit. The shoe sets the formality. For more on the dress code behind this, see our business casual guide and the work capsule wardrobe for managers.

Monday: ecru ribbed polo, chocolate trousers, tan derbies

Monday outfit: ecru ribbed polo, bitter chocolate pleated trousers and tan derby shoes
Monday: Ribbed Polo (Ecru) + Pleat Front Trousers (Bitter Chocolate) + Contrast Sole Derbies (Tan) · ~$253.97 · Courtesy of Marks & Spencer

Start the week soft and warm. The cream polo and the dark chocolate trousers are a classic pairing, and the tan derbies sit between them. The ribbing keeps the polo from looking flat, so you do not need a jacket.

Tuesday: white shirt, sable trousers, taupe suede trainers

Tuesday outfit: white Supima shirt, sable pleated trousers and taupe suede trainers
Tuesday: Supima Cotton Shirt (White) + Pleat Front Trousers (Sable) + Performance Suede Trainers (Taupe) · ~$283.98 · Courtesy of Marks & Spencer

A white shirt with sable trousers is the easiest neutral look there is. The taupe suede trainers keep it relaxed, so wear the shirt with the top button undone and the sleeves down. Everything here is within one shade family, which makes it read as one calm outfit.

Wednesday: navy knit polo, sable trousers, tan derbies

Wednesday outfit: navy knitted polo, sable pleated trousers and tan derby shoes
Wednesday: Knitted Polo (Navy) + Pleat Front Trousers (Sable) + Contrast Sole Derbies (Tan) · ~$239.97 · Courtesy of Marks & Spencer

The cheapest outfit of the week and one of the sharpest. Navy and sable are a safe, smart combination, and the tan shoe picks up the warmth in the trouser. This is the one to wear on a meeting day.

Thursday: light blue knit polo, chocolate trousers, taupe suede trainers

Thursday outfit: light blue knitted polo, bitter chocolate pleated trousers and taupe suede trainers
Thursday: Knitted Polo (Light Blue) + Pleat Front Trousers (Bitter Chocolate) + Performance Suede Trainers (Taupe) · ~$289.98 · Courtesy of Marks & Spencer

Brown and light blue is an old pairing that still works. The fine knit keeps the top light, and the taupe trainers bridge the gap between the blue and the dark trousers. It is the most casual outfit of the week.

Friday: black knit polo, black trousers, black loafers

Friday outfit: black knitted polo, black pleated trousers and black loafers
Friday: Knitted Polo (Black) + Pleat Front Trousers (Black) + Embossed Leather Loafers (Black) · ~$279.98 · Courtesy of Marks & Spencer

Finish the week dark. A head-to-toe black outfit looks deliberate when the textures differ: knit on top, twill below, a patterned loafer underneath. It takes you from the office straight to dinner. For more loafer ideas, see our best horsebit loafers guide.

How to choose

  • Fit first. Tapered, single-pleat trousers sit high enough on the waist that a polo can be tucked or left out. Pick your usual size and check the waist and the length.
  • Keep the palette small. Brown, sable, navy, black and cream all work with each other. Add color only in the top.
  • Spend where it shows. The trousers and shoes carry the look. The tops are the cheapest pieces here.
  • Care for it. Keep the suede trainers brushed and sprayed, and fold the knits.

Buy the Bitter Chocolate trousers and the tan derbies first. They make Monday's outfit and half of the others. For more of our M&S picks, see our first Marks & Spencer outfits guide and browse the work style section.

FAQ

What is the 3-piece formula for work outfits?

A top (polo, knit or shirt), a pleated trouser and one good shoe. Repeat the trousers and shoes and change the top, and you can dress for a week with 11 pieces.

How much do these five outfits cost?

From $239.97 for Wednesday's outfit to $289.98 for Thursday's, at prices checked on October 4, 2026. Buying every piece once costs about $928.

Can I wear sneakers to the office?

On casual days, yes, if they are clean and quiet. The taupe suede trainers here are plain and neutral. Skip them for client meetings and wear the derbies or loafers.

Where should I start if I can only buy a little?

Start with the Bitter Chocolate pleated trousers and the tan derbies. With a white shirt or cream polo you already have two outfits.
