Hoka made its name with maximal cushioning for runners. The Ora Primo is its recovery line pushed into cold-weather territory: a slip-on with an insulated puff upper, a chunky midsole and an outsole with real lugs. Gear Patrol and others have pointed out its basecamp feel, and the new neutral, earthy colorway makes it easier to wear with normal clothes. This is our read of Hoka's page and retailer listings, not a wear test.

What it is

The upper is an insulated puff in 78% textile and 22% synthetic, with a 100% textile lining. A soft knit collar sits around the ankle, a round elastic lace system lets you slip in without untying anything, and a pull loop at the heel helps. A protective toe bumper takes the knocks.

The platform

The stack is 48 mm at the heel and 42 mm at the forefoot, a 6 mm drop. The outsole is 55% EVA and 45% rubber, with 30% recycled content, and it has a rugged tread pattern.

How to wear it

Think of it as the shoe you change into. After a run, at a cabin, on a plane, around the house when the floor is cold. In the taupe and olive colorway it works with fleece, a chore coat or a field jacket, the kind of layers in our overshirt guide. If you want the run side of Hoka-style cushioning, see how a maximal running shoe compares in our On Cloudmonster deal.

The catch

It is chunky, and you either like that or you do not. The price is a range, $96 to $120, so check the colorway you want. And it is a recovery shoe: if you need a boot for snow, look elsewhere, for example the options in our footwear section.
