Apple spent years watching Samsung, Google and others sell folding phones while it stayed out of the category. That ended on September 9, when Apple announced the iPhone Duo on its Newsroom: the company's first book-style foldable, and in Apple's words the thinnest iPhone it has made when opened.
Closed: a normal-sized iPhone
Folded, the Duo is a compact phone with a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display. Apple says that screen gives you 90 percent of the display area of an iPhone 18 Pro, so the quick stuff — a text, a map, paying for coffee — never needs the phone opened.

Open: the biggest iPhone screen yet
Unfold it and a 7.6-inch inner display takes over, the largest screen Apple has put on an iPhone. This is where the price starts to make sense: two apps side by side, a long document, a video you'd normally watch on a tablet.

The hinge
Everything about a foldable lives or dies on the hinge. Apple describes a precision hinge with a smooth, consistent feel every time you open it, wrapped in the same Grade 5 titanium as the frame. Both faces are covered in Ceramic Shield 2.

What's under the glass
The Duo runs Apple's A20 Pro chip, with a vapor chamber for cooling and a dual-battery design split across the two halves. Apple rates it at up to 31 hours of video on the inner display, up to 44 hours on the outer one, and up to 24 hours of mixed use per charge. On the back, a 48MP Fusion Main camera with an optical-quality 2x Telephoto sits next to a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide, and a separate FaceTime camera under the inner display means video calls with the phone open don't need a notch in the screen.
Colors, price and who it's for
The iPhone Duo comes in two colors, star white and night sky. It starts at $1,999 for 256GB and climbs to $2,199, $2,599 and $3,199 for 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. Pre-orders open October 16; it ships October 23. Apple is also selling a $79 case and a $129 folio for it.

That price sits well above the iPhone 18 Pro Max, which is the honest way to read this phone. It isn't your next yearly upgrade; it's a first-generation product priced like one. It's for the person who has wanted a foldable for years but wasn't willing to leave iOS to get it. If that's you, pair it with a good set of noise-canceling headphones — a screen this size is built for video on the move. More in Tech and our tech news archive.
