Thom Browne has made a career out of one idea: the grey suit. Now it has arrived on a pair of headphones. The Bose x Thom Browne QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) are a limited-edition run in a heather grey that Bose calls Smoked Pearl, listed at $950 on Bose's own site and also on the Thom Browne site.

What changes: the finish. The ear cushions are heather grey cashmere, the headband carries a red, white and blue grosgrain tab, and one ear cup wears Thom Browne's four-bar stripes. Bose's product page also lists protein leather, aluminum and plastic in the construction. It looks like tailoring, not a gadget, and it reads well with a grey flannel suit, a navy overcoat or a plain knit.

What does not change: the technology. Bose highlights the same features as the regular line: its best noise cancelling with adjustable control, CustomTune sound personalization, spatialized Immersive Audio with a new Cinema Mode, and clear phone calls. Battery life is up to 30 hours, or 23 hours with Immersive Audio on, with a 3-hour charge.

The detail that sells it: the grosgrain tab on the headband, a small piece of the designer's signature detailing.

Who should buy it: the man who already wants top-tier noise cancelling and cares how the object looks on a desk, in a cabin or on a commute. If you only want the sound and quiet, the standard model does the same job for far less; our best noise-canceling headphones guide covers the field, and there is more in the audio section and the wider tech hub.

The catch: the price is a fashion premium on unchanged audio hardware. Bose lists the pair as limited quantity and final sale, so no returns or exchanges. Cashmere also asks for more care than a synthetic cushion, so keep them off the gym bag.

Verdict: an object for the man who dresses in one uniform and wants his gear to match it. If that is you, this is the smartest-looking pair of noise-canceling headphones we have seen. If not, the standard QuietComfort Ultra is the sensible buy.

Another design-led collaboration worth a look: the PRS Silver Sky Defender.
