Polaroid spent the last few years pushing creative tricks into an app. The new Mod does the opposite: a dial around the lens with four modes, a rechargeable battery and no smartphone needed. It costs $169.99. This is our read of Polaroid's announcement and specs, not a hands-on test.
The four modes
Double Exposure layers two frames on one print. Split Shot uses the included half-lens filter, rotated 180 degrees between shots, to put two scenes side by side. Motion Freeze pairs a longer exposure with a rear-curtain flash, so the subject is sharp with a trail of motion behind it. Light Painting holds the shutter open for about seven seconds so you can draw with a sparkler or a phone light.

What it shoots and how it runs
The Mod is fully analog and takes Polaroid i-Type and 600 film. It has a two-lens autofocus system with a close-up and a distance lens, an aperture range of f/11 to f/64 and a brightness dial. A 750 mAh USB-C battery is rated for about 15 film packs per charge. It weighs 520 g, so it is a bag camera, not a pocket one.

The catch
Instant film is not cheap, and creative modes mean more misses while you learn. Availability is also staggered: it is on Polaroid's store now, at select US retailers from October 6, and internationally in early 2027. If you want a gadget gift that is more about play than specs, it sits well next to the picks in our tech hub and works as a counterpoint to the audio gear in our Technics EAH-A1000 review.
Who it is for: the man who wants a screen-free, tactile hobby, or a gift for someone who likes film and process over perfect pixels. Prices checked October 1, 2026 and may change. More in Tech News.
